Why Your Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry Clothes

A load that once dried in 45 minutes but now needs two or three cycles is more than an inconvenience. When your dryer takes too long, it can raise energy use, delay laundry for the entire household, and point to a ventilation or appliance issue that should not be ignored.

For homeowners across the Lower Mainland, the most common cause is restricted airflow. But a slow dryer can also result from an overloaded drum, an incorrect cycle setting, a failing heating component, or a problem with the moisture sensor. The right response depends on what the dryer is doing - and what it is not doing.

Why a dryer takes too long to dry

A dryer works by circulating heated air through clothing and pushing humid air outdoors through the vent system. Drying slows down when any part of that process is interrupted. The machine may still tumble and feel warm, yet moisture remains trapped in the drum because damp air cannot leave efficiently.

A partially blocked lint screen is the simplest cause. Even if the screen looks clear, a thin coating from dryer sheets or fabric softener can restrict airflow. Washing the screen with warm water and a soft brush, then allowing it to dry fully, can help restore proper air movement.

The vent duct is often the bigger concern. Lint builds up inside the ductwork over time, especially in homes with long runs to an exterior wall or roof vent. Condos and townhomes can have particularly complex vent routes, which means a blockage may be well beyond the dryer itself. Crushed flexible ducting, loose connections, bird nests at the exterior cap, and damp lint packed in bends can all make drying times longer.

If air cannot escape, the dryer has to work harder. That increases wear on heating parts and may create a safety concern. A hot laundry room, a burning smell, or a dryer cabinet that feels unusually hot calls for immediate attention. Stop using the appliance until the airflow issue is properly checked.

Start with the checks you can safely make

Before assuming the dryer needs a repair, run through a few straightforward checks. These can solve minor performance problems without taking apart the appliance.

First, clean the lint screen before every load. Then inspect the exterior vent outlet while the dryer is running. You should feel a steady, warm flow of air outside. Weak airflow, no airflow, or a vent flap that barely opens suggests a blockage or disconnection.

Next, look at the load size. A packed dryer drum does not leave enough space for air to move through towels, bedding, or heavier clothing. On the other hand, very small loads can confuse some sensor-dry cycles because the sensor cannot detect moisture consistently. For bulky items, use a timed cycle when appropriate and dry similar fabric weights together.

Also confirm that the selected setting matches the load. Air-fluff and low-heat cycles are useful for delicate items, but they will take much longer with heavy cottons, jeans, or towels. If a normal cycle is consistently under-drying even with a moderate load, the issue is more likely airflow, heat, or sensing.

Avoid pushing the dryer tightly against the wall. The vent hose behind it can become crushed without being visible from the front. A restricted hose reduces airflow immediately and can turn a standard load into a two-cycle job.

Signs the problem is inside the dryer

If the lint screen is clean, the exterior vent is clear, and loads are still taking too long, the appliance may have a component failure. Dryers can lose heat completely, but partial heating problems are just as common. The unit may get warm enough to feel operational while never reaching the temperature needed to dry efficiently.

Electric dryers may develop issues with a heating element, thermal fuse, thermostat, wiring connection, or control board. Gas dryers can have problems with the igniter, flame sensor, gas valve coils, or burner assembly. These are not suitable do-it-yourself repairs, particularly where gas, high voltage, or safety cut-offs are involved.

Moisture sensors can also cause confusion. These metal strips inside the drum detect dampness and tell the dryer when to stop. Residue from dryer sheets can coat the sensor and make it read clothing as dry too early. Wiping the sensor bars gently with rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth may help. If the problem continues, the sensor circuit or electronic control may require diagnosis.

Watch for these warning signs that point to a repair rather than a simple cleaning issue:

  • The dryer runs but produces no heat, or heat comes and goes during a cycle.

  • Clothes are hot but still damp after a full cycle.

  • The dryer shuts off early on sensor settings but performs better on timed dry.

  • The machine makes new noises, trips a breaker, displays an error code, or has a burning odour.

A technician can test heating continuity, thermostats, airflow, sensors, and electrical connections rather than replacing parts based on guesswork. That matters with premium or complex appliances, where the wrong repair can create further damage or void coverage.

Vent cleaning versus dryer repair

It depends on the symptoms. If the dryer heats normally and airflow outside is weak, vent cleaning is usually the first priority. A clear, properly installed vent system allows the appliance to operate as designed and can reduce drying time significantly.

If exterior airflow is strong but clothes remain damp, the fault is more likely within the dryer. If there is no heat, uneven heat, repeated shut-offs, or unusual noises, a repair assessment is the practical next step. In some cases, both services are needed: a restricted vent may have caused an internal safety component to fail.

Do not assume age alone determines whether a repair is worthwhile. A well-maintained dryer with a failed thermostat, belt, roller, igniter, or heating element can often be repaired efficiently. The decision should be based on the appliance condition, the confirmed fault, the expected repair cost, and whether replacement offers a meaningful improvement for your household.

When to arrange professional dryer service

A dryer that needs multiple cycles every week is already costing time and electricity. It is worth arranging service promptly if basic lint-screen cleaning and load adjustments do not improve performance. Immediate service is especially sensible if the dryer smells hot, the breaker trips, the vent connection has come loose, or a gas dryer is not igniting reliably.
